GISBORNE NOTES.
[Special to the Sta».] , " July 13. A combination of tbe Wairoa and N euhaka districts in the formation of a harbor board may possibly lead to the construction of a aeep-water harbor a little to the south of Mania Peninsula.
The report of Mr Napier on the Waikokopu Harbor has just Deen made. It is possible, he states, that an excellent harbor could be constructed capable of admitting 12,000-ton vessels at a cost of £ICO,COO. The haroor, the engineer states, would be a better one than any on the East Coast from Auckland to Wellington. The depth of water would be about 35ft at the entranco and 33ft inside, with-,23ft to 24ft at the jetty, with good shelter and ample turning room. For £43,.00 the harbor could be part completed for a smaller class of vessels. A radway twonty-four miles in length would have to be constructed to connect Wairoa with the harbor. Once the scheme is adopted, freezing works will be established at Waikokopu, for the port would serve a large pastoral district. It seldom happens in this district that the machinery of the law has to be set in motion in connection with the obtainment of the annual Land and Income Tax returns. Yesterday Robert Little, of Gisborne, dairyman, was charged, upon the information of Mr Peter Hayes, Commissioner of Taxes, Wellington, with neglecting to answer the questions put to him in connection w r ith his return of land and mortgage made under the provisions of the Land and Income' Assessment Act, 1900, as required by the said Act. The defendant pleaded not guilty, and the case was adjourned.
