It is expected that fullv 160 boys and girls will present themselves for enrolment at the new school at Maori Hill on Monday. The school will be officially opened on Wednesdav.
A petition is being signed in the Palmerston district for presentation to the Government asking that the Meadowbank Estate, of about 10,000 acres, should be acquired for close settlement on the expiry of the lease of the present holder (Mr D. Ross).
Negotiations are in progress with a syndicate to place twelve South African rickshaws and native pollers in the Christchurch Exhibition grounds, where they will be available for hire by, the visitors to the Exhibition.
At the inquest on the body of the man Alexander Matheson, found dead on the Olrig Station, Hawke's Bay, a verdict was returned that death was caused by a. gun-
shot wound, but there was no evidence to T show how it was inflicted. , George Gaudin, formerly publisher of the ‘New Zealand Times,’ at Wellington, was yesterday committed for trial on two charges of converting to his own use the money of the ‘ Times ’ Company.
