GHRISTCHURCH, January 9, The Admiral has accepted the offer of thil Canterbury ladies' challenge shield for a gunnery competition lor *he Australasian squadron. The Admiral write* that already there is a challenge shield for squadron rifle practice, bat none for heavy-gun firing, though the latter is of far greater importance. Arrangements will be made for presenting tb« shield when the Euryalus is at Lytbelton next month.
_ Persistent rumors have been in circnlation in this city recently that a oompronuse has been effected over the Seddon-Taylor slander, case. Mr Taylor says there is n< truth in the rumor.
