The postmistress at Levin telegraphed at 5.20 this morning:-— ~ Tt is reported that a, vessel firing distress signals is off Ohau, five miles south of "Levin. The telephonist at Ohau reports that a party of men on the hills sent word that a steamer was firing signals of distress. Those on the flat are unable to sec the vessel." A later from Levin, timed 9.20 a.m., states that the steamer is still firing distress signals. At 12.-30 there were no further partislars from Ohau. A messenger sent from Otaki reports that he bad a good view of the beach for eight or nine miles on either side of the Otaki River, and saw eo sign of the vessel lie consi'dei-s she must have got off It was at first feared that the steamer in distress was the Queen of the Soudi, 121 tons, Captain Shaw, which left Wellington las*, night for Foxton, with a cargo of general merchandise and no passengers, but the arrival of the Queen of the South, reported later from Fozton, set doubts on that score at rest. 1.52 p.m. At one o'clock this afternoon the Marino Department despntched the steamer Hiiaitangi from Wellington to the mouth of the Ohau River, to render any assistance that may be required in connection with the vessel reported u, be in distress off the coast. There are no further particulars available from the Ohau River, but it is surmised that the v,-s el in distress niav be either the stcamor Mana or the ship Callao. both of which left here vesterdav, the former for Patea and the "latter for Newcastle.
