CASUALTIES.
A Westport message states that a young man named Gooding was drowned in the Ngakawau River while bathing. Henry Smith, clerk at the Kakairai fellmongery, near Oamaru, was.found dead at the works on Wednesday morning. Deceased had been in the position of clerk for some considerable time, and lived at the works. He resided in' lie Oaniaru dietrict for some twenty years, but had' no relatives there. The Cronweli Argus' reports that a Chinaman at Caxdrona committed suicide last Sunday bj hanging himself. At Mosgiei cu Wednesdav a$ the Misses Gibson were driving down Gordon road the wheel of the trap came off. The young lady who was driving placidly kept the horse well in hand until the occupants got out, without any harm being done. Olive Agnes taming, ten years of age, while gathering small coal on the railway line at Lyttelton on Wednesday evening, was run over by a truck of a long goods train. Both legs had to be amputated. The girl died from shock about an hour later. e A Carterton message states': —At Booth's milis a log fell on a boy named Bishop and crushed his abdomen. He was sent to the hospital, where he lies in a serious condition. Mafoupuku, the wellknown chief, died last night of heart disease.
An Auckland message states that the body of Matthew Henderson, who disappeared •on January 6 in a mysterious •way, was recovered to-day at Pine Island, three-quarters of a mile from the spot where he was missed.
PETLDING, January 14. Lost night a young woman named Mary Lee, a stranger to this town, attempted to commit suicide by swallowing mafcchheads at a boarding-house. She is now in charge of the police, but cannot be removed from the lock-up, as she is still delirious.
