MISS PASSMORE'S PUPILS

Miss M. L. Passmore, a persevering and duly-qualified member of that somewhat numerous body of coloniaUy-trained artists -whose services are at the disposal of students, opened this afternoon her first exhibition Af pupils' work, the paintings being hung in the Wesleyan Church Hall off Cargill road, South Dunedin. Judging by the results, the idea of holding such an exhibition is well justified. We venture to think that the pupils' parenta and friends are perfectly satisfied and perhaps a little surprised at the standard of merit that is reached. The paintings are ail in oil colors, the subjects mostly landscapes or flowers. Some of the pupils, as, lor instance, Mrs Rabbidge and Miss Hunt, have studied exclusively from nature, and in most of their productions the results of the correct training of eye and hand are strongly in evidence. Miss Passmore has obviously paid attention not only to brushwork, but to composition—this can be seen in all the sections of the gallery. Some of the best examples are from the" easels of Miss Clark, Miss Wiilan, Miss Stark, Miss Harrison, and Mr M'Connell, but others also deserving of mention are Miss King, Mr E. Brown, Miss White, Miss Findlay. Mr J. Brown, the Misses Lambert, and Miss L. Brown; whilst of the juniors there is distinct promise from Miss Rachel Passmore, Miss Sutherland, and Miss Bella Peterson. ~a ll? o sfc evei 7 instance the pictures are well finished and interesting, and, while avoiding individual comparison, we may remark that in one or two cases there is room for high hope as to the results of continued study. Miss Passmore's classes are distinctly a service tc the community
