o [Pke Ukued Press Association.] CHBISTCHUPvCH, December 15. At a meeting of the City Council last night it was decided to aaopt the recommendation of the Water Supply Committee that public notice should be given of a special loan of £IOO,OOO, which is proposed to be raised for the construction of the necessary works. The Committee submitted a notice which provided that £50,000 shall be raised for the first instalment of the scheme, and a similar amount for the reticulation of the City.
An outbreak of the African horse disease, piuk-eye, has occurred in Christcnordi. About 100 horses have already been infected and one or two have died. It is supposed that the disease was brought over in troopers' baggage, and has been lurking in the country ever since. Horses in the livery stables are largely affected. NAPIER, December 15. An eight-roomed house at Awatoto, owned and occupied by Mr J. Broa-dbent, was totally demolished by fire early this morning. Timely rain saved the wool-washing works adjoining. Insurances: On the house, £200; on the contents, £l2O, both in the New Zealand. AUCKLAND, December 15. G. Massey Watson, whose failure in 1893 will be remembered chiefly on account of tbe part two fierce bulldogs played in it, received his discharge from bankruptcy at the Supreme Court to-day. He is at present gum-digging, making'£3o a year, and receiving £SO a year from his family. One of the best business sites in the city, known as Brunswick Mart, Queen street, was sold by auction to-day for £14,500, equivalent to £357 9s per foot frontage. The bidding was spirited. The purchaser was Mr James Hardie, of Auckland. Other Queen street property sold privatelv at £4OO per foot. J
