They escaped in safety, though a watchman witnessed the assassination. The deed is regarded as an act of revenge for (he Governor's stern repression of the Slatonski disorders. It is reported in St. Petersburg that there is a plot to assassinate all the Governors in the provinces. [Recent Press communications from Russia irtimate that assassination of high officials is not regarded with horror, but, on the contrary, comments are frequently laudatory of the would-be assassins and contemptuously indifferent to the fate of the victims.]
