"Johnnie," a pelican in Central Park, New York, has attracted much attention ;by acting as his own barber. At one time 1 a pelican that attracted attention because of his'handsome and well-groomed plumage, , Johnnie became careless of his appearance j a year ago, and allowed the feathers on his neck to grow without trimming or cleaning them. Remorse, however, grew upon him, and one morning visitors were surprised to find that, acting as his own barber, he had shaved his scraggy feathers from his neck. Though he la< ked shaving [ soap and a mirror, he used his long, sharp bill as shears and razor to such advantage that he transformed himself from an un-,Ttempt-appearing fowl into one of the handIsomest birds in the menagerie.
