SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
CHRISTCHURCH, April 17. The Scottish Society wrote on August 25 to Mr Andrew Carnegie asking for his portrait, and for a contribution of books having special interest for Scotsmen. Mr Carnegie replied enclosing his photograph, and stating that he would have pleasure in sending some books as evidence of his interest in the society, and asking for a list from which to select. The list was forwarded to Mr Carnegie. WELLINGTON, April 17. A deputation representing the meat industry of Canterbury interviewed the Premier and Sir J. G. Ward yesterday on important matters relating to the industry. Details of the interview are not available for publication at present. It is probable that the Commissioners’ report with reference to the John King inquiry at Auckland will be completed on. Tuesday next Mr Kinsella, the Government Dairy Commissioner, has definitely accepted the offer made him by the Transvaal authorities. The question of Ills successor is now under consideration of the Government, who, it is thought, will likely fill the vacancy with an expert outside New Zealand.
