NAPIER, October 6.
Nearly all the visiting horses for the Jockey Club's races on Wednesday have now arrived, and there was a large muster of touts on the course this morning, m expectation of good gallops, but the visitors were disappointed, nothing extraordinary being accomplished. Windwhistle and Golden Vein put in a fast four furlongs. Orloff got over seven furlongs in good time. Rose Maddern negotiated half a mile on the grass in excellent style. All the others were exercised steadily. The weather is now looking settled, and the course will be in splendid order.
DUNEDIN HOMING PIGEON CLUB. The above held' a race last Saturday week from St. Andrews, a distance of 101 miles air line. Through a fault in th* timing clock two of the competitors flew off for third place, the result of the race being as follows : Mr E. J. Reeves's bird Green Wood first, with a velocity of 1,235 yds 2ft per minute; Mr J. G. Macdonald's bird Boreas second, with a velocity of 976 yds per minute; and Mr R. Doiiglas's bird Reliance third, with a velocity of 885 yds Ift per minute.
