[Per United Pbkss Association.] WELLINGTON, October 1. In the Land Board appeal case, after hearing evidence, His Honor 'the Chief Justice explained to the jury that there weie Wo important questions of laW which he reserved for future consideration. The first was as to whether anything,more than personal residence was necessary; the second was as to whether there had been a waiver. The questions of fact fdr the jury to determine were—(l) Did the appellant personally reside on the property from 9th April to 19th December? (2) Has he personally resided there from the 19th December to the present time? The jury answered both questions in the affirmative. Judgment . was . reserved until the legal points involved have been argued in banco.

NAPIER, October 1. An eight-roomed building on the Chaucer road, which was in course of enlargement, was destroyed by fire early this morning. A strong westerly wind was blowing at the time, and tho Royal Hotel had a-narrow escape. The carpenters employed on the building lost all their tools. CmiIBTCHURCH, October 1. At the Police* Court this morning John Clancy was charged with breaking into tho house of John Haigh and stealing therefrom a gold watch and gold ring, together valued at £6, on the 18tb May list. Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial.

WATROA, October 1. A number of bush-fellers at Waireka Station were practising at a pea-rifle target when the weapon refused to go off. In his address to the Grand Jury in the Supreme Court, Judge Connolly commented on the youth of the accused, the oldest of six being only twenty-threo, and two only seventeen. F. Copeland pleaded guilty to horse-stealing, and was admitted to probation for twelve months. H. L. Parker, who pleaded guilty to theft, was also admiited to probation for twelve months. Tho Judge commented on the negligence of the informant in sending a large sum of money through tho post without registration. J. H. Hooten was sentenced to two years for forgery.
