ST. PETERSBURG, September 24.
Tho newspaper ‘ Novoe Vreyma’ is perturbed at the announcement that a start has been made with the Bagdad Railway. [A concession was granted last year to a German syndicate for the construction of a line through Adana, Marash, Ourfa, Mardin, and Mossoul to Bagdad, and thence down the valley of the Euphrates to tho Persian Gulf. Tho country has been surveyed, and the commercial prospects of the line have been carefully examined. Tho conclusion resulting from thia investigation was that the line would cost the sum of £20,000,000 to build, and that for a long time to come it must be dependent very largely upon Government assistance. The sum required for the payment of interest will be £1,000,000 per annum. A great part of tbo district traversed is very sparsely populated, and much land is consequently quite uncultivated; while the difficulties in the way of travellers, especially natives, iu tho interior of this country render the prospects of passenger traffic very poor. In spite of all tht.se drawbacks it seems not unlikely that the line will ultimately be built.]
