SIR J. G. WARD.
Sir Joseph Ward arrived at Hamilton yesterday evening, and proceeded at once to the post office, the object of hisyvisit being to formally open the braiding. The mayor and councillors met him at the station, and drove with him. Sir Joseph congratulated the people on the great progress the colony had made during the bust few years, and the people of the Waikato in particular; in fact, the progress of the district had justified the Government in spending so large a sum on a post office. After some patriotic remarks Sir Joseph said that as further evidence of the progress of the Waikato, the business at the Hamilton office had doubled within the last three years. He then declared the building open, and with cheers for the Minister the function concluded.
A Peace Society has been formed in Wellington, and at a recent meeting of members a resolution was passed “ deprecating the action of the New Zealand Government m sending contingents to South Africa to help in the suppression of self-governing States. It is understood that the Government have arranged to purchase 8,000 acres of the Mount Parnasous Estate, in the neighborhood of Cheviot.
