HOKITIKA, FehroMf 14 At the driving of the first pile of the New River Bridge this afternoon the Premier the late James M*candrew\i foresight in advocating that the Sooth Itland should be encircled by an iron band, but in thpse days he was looked on as * dreamer. He hinted at the probability at the necessary tunnel in connection with 43m E*i£i_ Coast line being shortened as a Jesuit of Mr Bogue's report, and amid cheers said he hoped to be Premier and member far Westland when the bridge was completed.
