UNION STREET SCHOOL.
Sir Frederick and Lady Sargood and party paid a visit to the Union etreet School this afternoon. The first room, visited was that of the infant department, where some kindergarten exercises were gone through in honor of their distinguished visitors. Standards L, IL, EC, and IV. were afterwards inspected, whese reading, geography, and grammar exercises were in progress. Sir Frederick and party then proceeded to the school hall, where the school cadets (in uniform) were put through physical drill. The girls afterwards gave an exhibition of gymnastic exercises. Mr G. C. Israel (chairman of the Committee) and Messrs Finny and Ireland represented the Committee. Sir Frederick briefly addressed the cadets, complimenting them on their drill, and urging them to pay close attention to the fugleman. He informed the boys that he had recommended the Right Hon. Mr Seddon and Sir Joseph Ward to arm the school cadets with rjfles, and he hoped when he again visited New Zealand to tee them all properly armed. He claimed to be the " Father" of the school cadet movement in Victoria, and remarked that one of the finest sights at the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament was the 7,000 State school cadets who paraded before their Royal Highnesses at Flemington. Sir F Sargood was heartily cheered on leaving.
