SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

WELLINGTON, February 1L The effect of the Federal Tariff on tha hop growth in the Nelson district is easily seen by anyone who, has had previous acquaintance with that bonny locality. The time was when hop gardens spread everywhere over the- district; to-day a good many miles have to be travelled before the eyes light upon the upstanding poles and the green vines. Many growers rooted up their vines entirely, and have devoted the laud to other purposes, but a few still have faith in the market, believing that it will ae some years before Victoria can wholly supply the needs of Australia, and that they win possibly reap a reward for their perseverance when the market calls.

Dr Mason, after attending the mtereoioHial Medical Conference at, Hobart as the representative of the New Zealand Government* will visit Sydney to investigate the plague outbreak i»nd the conditions under which it is being combated. He will watch the disease in its different phases, and will visit other States hi the Commonwealth, and inquire into the methods of the health departments in the various centres. It is stated that the amount to be paid by the British Government to Charles Lillywhite as compensation for his wrongful arrest on a, charge of having committed a murder at Cokhester is £6OO. This is supposed to cover a year's salary at his trade and his law expenses. The Home Government will also pay his passage back to New Zealand, wheits he intends to settle.
