(Received February 12, at 9.20 a.m.) The sculling race between Baxiy and Henry Pearce, tho Australian, over the Tyne course, for £SO a side, resulted in a win for Barry by three lengths. LAWRENCE RACES. [By Tub Abmirai*] Perfect weather prevailed for tie opening day of the Tuapeka Club's nineteenth annual meeting. The special train from town w;vs not well patronised on leaving Dunedin, but large numbers joined at Milton and Waitahuna. The fields included a larger proportion of local candidates than usual The dual dividend was paid out when seven or more horses started. Results : MAIDEN PLATE, of 20 sots. One mile—Dent's Secret Service (8.12, H. Emmerson'l 1, O'Donnell's Witch Winnie (8.2, £. M'Combe 2, Cartwright's Ravenswing (8.12, M. Allan) 3. Also started: Silver Wave (9.1), l.adysmith (8.12), Saddkr (8.12% and West Eyre (8.2). Witch Winnie hung at the post. Silver Wave and Secret Service made the running for three furlongs, when Secret Service took charge, an 4 going on, won easily by two lengths, three lengths separating Witch Winnie and Ravenswing. Time, linin 52£ sec.' On the machine. £llß 10s. Dividends: Secret Service, £3 16s; Witch Winnie, 12s. PUBLICANS' HANDICAP, of 30 sovs. Sis furlongs. Mr HoTe'R Opportunity, 7.9 ~.(S. Smith) 1 Mr Ferris's Lady Torrent, 7.13 (L. D. lung) 2 Mr Lettoofs Tho Maltster, 8.7 (J. Bamber) 3 Also ran 4 Far Niente (8.4). Opportunity showed tie way throughout, winning by four lengths; half a length separating the second and third horses. Time, lmin 21sec On the machine, £lßl. Dividend, £2 16s. A protest was lodged against Opportunity (late First Chance), alleging that it was a "rirger." After Mr Hore, who is a miner at, Naseby, had made a declaration that he had purchased the mare privately in June last from Mr J. M'Knight, in Wright, Stephenson, and Co.'s saleyards at Dunedin, and that to the best of his knowledge the horse had not run previously, it was resolved to dismiss the protest ar»d to return the epposit. No evidence was given to substantiate the protest. HACK HANDICAP, of 20 sovs. Seven furlongs. Mr Sheehv's Annoyance, 9.5 (E. M'Combe) 1 Mr Smith's Lord Rnle, 9.0 (R, Smith) 2 Mr Cook's Blackpool, 9.10. (H. Carr) 3 Also ran: little Bob (9.2), Lord Zetland (9.2), Forest, King (8.12), Fashoda (8.0). Before a furlong had been covered Lord Rule, the favorite, had a couple of tenths' lead, and as be increased his advantage along the back stretch the- race appeared to bo all over, bat when challenged by Annoyance he failed to respond, and was beaten by three-quarters of a length; Blackpool was a good third. Time, lmin 35sec. On the machine, £177. Dividends: Arnoyance, £4 8s; Lord Rule, 10s. The Two-mile Trot was won by Smiler (£4 18s), with Bkckweed (18s) second. Time, 6min 30sec
