Mr Pirie. the member for North Aberdeen, asked in the House of Commons whether the Bergl contract had been transferred to Wcruher and Beits’s people for £IOO,OOO. Lord Stanley said that the War Office was aware that there was a syndicate backing Bergl, and that it was intended to float a company. He found the syndicate was equal to fulfilling the contract. He was not aware of Bergl’s agreement with the syndicate, but £200,000 had been deposited as a guarantee of fulfilment of the contract. He admitted that Bergl had been fined in Liverpool for an offence which was outside the army contracts. He was inquiring into the circumstances. Lord Stanley later on communicated to the Press the statement that the backers, who were reliable firms, guaranteed that if Bergl got the contract a company would be formed. The company have now been formed and registered. PRETORIA, February 3. £650,000, whereof £200,000 was subscribed, was the tender given by Bergl, re-ptts-enting the company now formed. SOUTH AUSTRALIA APPROVES. CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. The Premier has received the fallowing cable from the Horn R. Butler, Acting-Pre-mier of South Australia, at Adelaide; “ Our Agent-General has been instructed to co-operate in protesting against Argentine meat in South Africa.”
