Prow Awoc'ation—By Telegraph—Copyright.

SYDNEY. February 4.

After a delay of an hour, owing to rain, play was resumed, but sixteen minutes onlv had elapsed when it again came down, and plav was stopped till after lunch. The wicket was not affected by the early rain, but the mid-dav shower did some damage. Play was slow, and as the game progressed the ball was bumping a lot Garnett had only added 8 when Poidevin secured a catch at point Five wickets for 659. Braund was associated with Quaife, the latter plodding along with his score. The Somerset man got in some hard strokes, rising to 20. and then Gregory caught him finely, low down, at mid-on. Six for 690. A few runs were made later by Quaife, who had been at the wickets for three hours fifty-seven minutes. He then gave Clarke a catch at fine leg. Seven for 695. Jones and Lilley were then partnered, the runs coming but slowly. Lilley brought the seventh century up, nine hours thirteen minutes having been occupied m the compilation. Jones infused some little life into the scoring, when his career was ended by Carter catching him at the wickets. Eight for 719. M'Gahey came next, and several bowling changes were tried, the batsmen plaving the bowlers quietly. At the afternoon tea adjournment the weather cleared and the sun appeared. M'Gahey and Lilley gradually fetched the score up, till the latter lifted one high to Trumper, who, after a great run, effected a wonderfully clever catch. Nine for 769. Gunn, the last man, tapped a soft one into Trumper's hands, and retired without adding to.the total, and the innings closed. Gregory and Hopkins commenced an uphill battle for New South Wales, Braund and Gunn opening the attack. The former's last ball beat Hopkins, who played back at it. One wicket for 2. Trumper filled the vacancy, and 8 had been added when Gregory pulled Gunn hard. Maclaren catching smartly. Two for 10. Poidevin next opened with a boundary. Trumper had a bit of luck at the hands of Jones in the second slip. The chance was difficult, but resulted in 4. Both batsmen punished Braund. but the Somerset bowler had his revenge. He tempted Poidevin out by a nice one. Poidevin touehed it, and was run out. Three for 25. Gregory followed, and some clever run-getting between the two ensued. Trumper timing Braund nicely, and getting into the twenties. Fifty was recorded in forty-two minures. With 60 up Jessop replaced Gunn. Off the fourth ball Lilley caught Trumper. Four for 67. Duff succeeded, but was dismissed with a remarkable ball, which went past Braund's hand at short slip and bounded high to Maclaren, who secured it Five for 75. Noble followed. Gregory continued to knock ;;p singles and now and then a pair until time was called. Scores:
