SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

At the meeting of the St. Clair School Committe last night it was reported that the girls' playground had been very largely improved, and was now nearly all asphalted, whilst other improvements included the making of a separate entrance to the gymnasium and providing a tidy path in front. The Committee decided to at once form swimming classes for practice in the adjacent sea r>ath, where the children can get the benefit of the clear water of the Pacific Ocean, and instructors were appointed, Miss M. Walker taking charge of the girls and M- E. Grimmett the boys. Messrs Baskett and Baker were associated with Mr Pope as a subcommittee to manage the swimming arrangements. The Committee expressed their satisfaction at the creditable position won by Loftu? Rae at the scholarship examinations, and placed on record their appreciation of Mr Pope's work in preparing the pupils for the tests. The High street S'ciool Committee met last evening, when there were present Messrs Watson (cavrmnn), Fleming, Taylor. Melvin, Walker, and West (secretary). It was decided to hoM over the appointment of an additional assistant till Monday night. A cheque for £2 15s was received fiom the secretary <. r the Demonstration Committee, being the school's proportion of the balance resuming from the Royal visit demonstration.
