COMMAND OF THE CONTINGENT.

WELLINGTON, February 5.
I have good authority for saying that the probabilities are that the Ninth, on arrival in South Africa, will be placed under the command of Colonel Porter, who is now in charge of the Seventh, and whose term will expire in Mav next. LOCAL NOTES. The medical, shooting, and riding tests were continued all to-day. 'The majority of the men will bo selected to-morrow and sent into camp. The members of I'ie Auckland Recruiting Eoard have finished examining applicants for enlistment as numbers of the Ninth Contingent. Thero -vis a great rush of &ppKc<iEts, and the demand for places in the Ninth was quite as great as for the Lighiii. Between 3V» an! 400 presented ■:hemstlves, and the ejamhwrs were enabled i.> make a very satisfactory selection. The I'hysiqne of most of th« volunteers is excellent. HOKITLKA, February 6. Ten men for the Ninth Contingent were selected last evening ?rom forty applicant*. The number includes four returned troopers. The men are leaving this morning for Dunedin via Wellington, -ind are accompanied by Sergeant-major Miller. NAPIER, February 5. Two hundred and ten applications have been received for the twenty-five positions allotted to this district in the Ninth Contingent. ________________
