Most people know by this time that Dickens’s Cheoryble Brothers (‘ Nicholas Nicklobywere inspired by two Lancashire tradesmen, two farmer’s sons, whom a great flood brought to the verge of ruin, and Avho, by their energy and character, retrieved their prosperity and established themselves as successful merchants. There is a lofty tower op a hill near Walmsriey which brings to mind the originals of this pair of brothers. It marks the spot where, in their trouble, they set up a stick, and made up their minds to establish themselves in the. direction in which it fell. PolloAving the course thus opened out, they reached the village of Ramsbotham, where they began their new careers in a mill.
