SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
CHRISTCHURCH, February 4. The weather was very warm in Christchurch yesterday, and the thermometer registered 90deg in the shade. It is equally as hot to-day. At the meeting to which the Canterbury members of Parkment were invited yesterday, to consider the question of suggesting the establishment of a depot for Boer prisoners at the Chatham Islands, it was decided to adjourn the meeting ponding the receipt of an opinion from the residents of the islands.
At a meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association last rughl a resolution was carried that steps be taken to engage a professional coach to improve cricket in Canterbury. Two or three local supporters of the game have already promised £lO each for three years towards the object. Captain Rhodes has been presented by the employes on his estate with a silver flask, on the occasion of his departure for South Africa.
A rumor gained currency that the inebriates’ homes about to be established by -he Government were to be confined to paying patients. Mr ETI, M.H.R., therefore communicated with the Minister of Education hi regard to the matter, and received a reply to the effect that there is no intention to limit the benefits to one class only.
