At the close of the performance Mr° Barrett made a speech extending a humble acknowledgment to " those who by their intellect and pens had endeavored to make his season a successful one." He ha-i ;i gentle: dig at certain local critics, wh < not agreeing with Mr Barrett's conception of some of the characters he appeared in, have had the courage to say so. He also spoke a few words to the members of the contingent present, regretting that his own coming visit to South Africa was not as one of them.
The North Canterbury Infantry Battalion and South Island Battalion of the Eighth Contingent held a church parade yesterday, when 800 men were present. Five thousani people visited the camp yesterday afternoon.
