VOLUNTEERING.
The Dimedin City Guards entertained three of their old members—Corporal Thome (Fifth Contingent) and Troopers Clymu, and Cornish (Fourth Contingent)— at a smoke concert last evening. Trooper Carpenter, of the Fourth Contingent, was also present. Captain Crawford presided, and the officers present were Lieutenants Jack and Doujlas. The Chairman proposed the toast of the evening, and in doing so welcomed the men back from the front, and referred to the great service rendered to the Empire by New Zealanders. He expressed the hope that the two other members of the City Guards at present in South Africa would return home safely. Ambng the other toasts honored were "The Army and Navy," "Absent Comjades," "Ex-Members," and "The Ladies." Musical items were given by several members of the company, and altogether a very pleasant evening was spent. Sergeant West, of the B Battery, presided at the piano.
