Grasspan" and Hautvillers were backed for the Victorian Derby at 2 to 1 each to win. a, good stake. In ihe Derby and Melbourne Cup, as well as in the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups doubles, the names of thes,e two colts also figured prominently for large sums. MACLAREN'S TEAM. A Sydney message states that the Cricket Association have fixed the dates of the following matches with Mablaren's English team. The first against New South Wa.les, will be on November 23; the first test on December 14; the second match against New' South Wales on February 1; and the fourth test on February 15. The Dunedin Homing Pigeon Club held a race on Saturday last from St. Andrews, a distance of 101 miles air line. This race was composed of birds bred lost season, and the result was satisfactory, considering the disadvantage of the wind. The successful competitors were:—Mr J. G. Macdonald's Ladas, 1, with a velocity of 1,064 yds 2ft per minute; the same owner's Boreous, 2, with a velocity of I,olsyds lit per minute; Mr R. Douglas's Alsatia, 3, with a. velocity of 982 yds ift per minute. The Dunedin Jockev Club's spring meeting will be held at Wingatui on October 9 and 12. q
