THE IMPERIAL TROOPS.
A GREAT WELCOME. ARRIVE ABOUT 3rd FEBRUARY. Last night His Worship the Slayor (Mr R. Chisholm) received the following wire from the Acting-Premier, the Hon. J. G. Ward: You will be glad to hear that the Imperial and Indian troops will visit New Zealand. The steamer leaves Melbourne fer the Bluff on the 29th inst., and should arrive in New Zealand about 3rd Pebruarv. I shall endeavor to obtain the definice dale from the Commanding Officer. The trains will bo conveyed to Dunedin by two special trains from Invercargill. Their total tune in the colony, including the days of arrival and departure, will be ten days, I hope to wire you soon what time can - be spent m your City. I feel that it is unnecessary for me to ask you and your enterprising citizens to co-operate with the Government in giving a right royal reception to the troops, and one worthy of the high reputation which Dunedin has earned in the past in this respect. There will be about a thousand troops in all. I am waiting a reply from their Commanding Officer as to the number of horses he will require, and on receipt of it I shall wire you. lam quite certain that the citizens of Dunedin and the residents of Otago generally will do all in their'power to make the visit of the Imperial troops a memorable one. Excursion trains will be ran -from the various centres to Dunedin to give the country people a chance of seeing the representatives of Her Majesty’s Army from the Old Land and India.
