For some time past the police in tie West hm have had numerous complaints of pickpockets being busy in the different places of worship, and not only hare watches and purses been abstracted from the pockets of persons on entering or leaving, tut many umbrellas have been stolen. Recentlv there was a very large congregation at Portman Chapel Baker street,, Wl, to hear Mr Ira D. bankey, ttie well-known evaltffelist, sin" The Rev. Griffiths Thomas, the incumbent; before proceeding with the sermon, said that on occasions iike the present, and on Communion Sundavs, a number of objectionable persons attended.
