CATJLFIELD GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE. The V.A.T.C. winter meeting was concluded on Saturday, when the principal event resulted as follows: GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE of 1,300 soys. About four miles. „ Chelsea, 11.10 (Brooks! 1 Signal, 9.12 (Regan) 2 E, »ro, 11.3 ... (Edge) 3 Seventeen started. Betting: Sto 1 against Euro, 9 to 1 Chelsea. Only seven finished, the others falling or running off. Stamford made the running to the treble the third time round, when he fell caving Chelsea in front. Euro ran up to the leader at the last fence, but died away on the flat. Chelsea won easily by eight lengths Time, Bmin 18sec. %
THE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.
. CKRISTGHURCH, August 12. 1 raining operations at Riccarton Jo-day were witnessed by a large number of visitors. The Spinner, who put in an appearance yesterday, completed a half-pace circuit, and is in capital buckle. Sir Lancelot and Ideal worked together, the former pulling hard all the way. Coeur de Lion put in two half-pace rounds, coming home fast. Dundee and The Whip were also mated in schooling tasks over the principal big fences. Dundee struck the sod wail heavily, but got over the others creditably, and pulled up fairly sound after completing a fast circuit. Others to do strong to medium pacing were:—Torpina, Roller, Ruamahunga, Hauriri, Huntingdon, Sundial, Halcyon, Kauri Gum. Tataramoa, Mariah, Auk, and Kawhai; while Huku, Gillie. Belligerent, St.raithnairn, Straybird, Honors, Rex 11., and several others had light tasks. On Saturday Record Reign and Ilex were companions in a schooling gallop over the hurdles. The former fenced indifferently, and the Oaniaru horse gained at every hurdle. There is very little betting on the Grand National.' The Friar is slightly favorite, and in the Hurdles Record Reign is strongly fancied, and for the Winter Cup Sir Lancelot.
The Wellington Hockey Club beat Kaiapoi at Wellington on Saturday. Millar's Australian Cup Yacht Race at C'owes has been declnred off, owing to lack of entries.
