FIRES IN MAY.

A compilation has been made by the • Mercantile Record' of the fires that took place in New Zealand in May—at least from May Ito May 29. There were twenty-six fires reported, and of these three occurred in the South Island and twenty-three in tt.o Nor' hj. The largest fire was ai Invercargill on May 4, the insurance involved amounting to £10,750. The property destroyed was covered by insurances to the extent of £19,645 in the North Island and £12,050 in the South, the total for the colony being £31,695. The risks held by the several companies (whiah do not include reinsurance*) are as follow: South British £5,335, New Ztialand £4 820. Norwich Uuion £4150, Sun £3 850, Commercial Union £2,880, Royal £2.635, National £1,390, Standard £1,090, Northern £95", Victoria £950, Imperial £750, Royal Exchange £650, United £SOO, Phceaix £SOO, Liverpool and London and Globe £4OO, Alliance £lB5, North British £l5O, North Qne-nsland £SO. Magdeburg £SO; total £31,695.
