SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The regular monthly meeting of the newlyelected Committee of the Port Chalmers District High School was held on Tuesday evening, there being present the chairman (Mr John M'Lauchlan), Messrs Morgan. Sbarpe, Mill, Tait, M'Grcgor, M'Kay, and T. J. Thomson. The rector's report was received, which showed the number on the roll to be 493 and the average attendance for the month of May 444. The Visiting Committee for the past month submitted their report, which showed the improvements that were bting carried out in connection with the school grounds to be progressing favorably: and further recommended the erection of a small shed for general purposes. The report was considered very satisfactory, and was received. The secretary of the Tennis Club wrote forwarding a donation of £5 towards the improvement to the school grounds, which was received with thanks, and the secretary was instructed. to write conveying the same to the club. The bank book laid upon the table showed a credit balance at date of £8 6s lid. A circular was received from the St. Clair Committee protesting against the proposal of the Education Board to alter and change school books. The Board's circular re the same was also read : and after considerable discussion it was unanimously decided to support the protest of the St. Clair Committee. The District High School question was again brought under consideration, and it was resolved that Messrs P. B. Fraser and Thomas Mackenzie be requested to visit Port Chalmers and address a meeting in the interests of the Port Chalmers District High School. It teas resolved to form a cadet, corps in connection with the school, and the chairman and Messrs Shai-pe and Thomson wore appointed to confer with the rector and make all arrangements. It was further decided to ask for fresh tenders for tho supply of coal and firewood for use in the school. Messrs Morgan and Mill were appointed a visiting committee for the month.
| The ordinary meeting of the Green Island School Committee was held in the.. .u nlrrom last utijht. A discussion took place on the changing of the school books and the action of the Education Board re ' Imperial leaders,' -when the following resolution vus carried unanimously :~" This Committee, having considered the Board's circular re the introduction of the ' Imperial Readers.' protest against those books heing pressed into the school, and consider that a uniform set of hooks should be adopted throughout the Board's schools for a period of not. less than seven years ; that all books should he chosen by a committee of teachers ; and that separate geographies, grammars, and arithmetics for each standard entails an enormous and unnecessary expense to parents." The monthly meeting of the Ravensbourne School Committee on Monday was attended by all the members. Mrs (Gregory was appointed janitress. The head-master's report showed 230 on roll, with an average attendance of 202; that Miss Little had been granted one month's leave of absence.on account of illness; and that the school was working short-handed. A resolution of sympathy was passed to the head-master and his wife owing to a family bereavement. The Committee affirmed the desirability of uniformity in school books, and instructed their delegates to bring the question before the first meeting of the School Committees' Conference. A letter was received from Mr D. Fergußson enclosing £2 as a donation to the piano fund, and 11 promise, if a piano were obtained, to pay the expenses of tuning for one year. Mr'Ross intimated his intention of "presenting the school football team with a ball. It was decided to ask the Education Board to make definite arrangements in the matter of the school residence, tho head-master having complained that the house was most unsuitable for his family.
