THE ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

[Fnosi Ocr Own- Reporter.] The eleventh New Zealand amateur championship meeting, held on the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on Saturday, proved a most successful gathering from every point of view. The weather was perfect", except for a slight north-west wind, and the racing was well up to the usual standard. The attendance was not so large as one expected, there being only about 2,000 persons present. The Auckland boys were in great form, and succeeded in easily, winning the "banner for their province, this being the third time in four years that the banner has gone to the Xorthern province. Their performance was a most meritorious one, when it is considered that their team only consisted of four members—George Smith, Madill, inline, and Dickey. The first-mentioned proved himself a ehiimnion of chainnions, and he bimsctf scored 24 points out of the total of 57. To start in"six races in one day, and win them all, two of the number being heals, is a ncrfnnnance of which he should well feel proud, and he can now claim the distinction of winning both the lOOvds llat and the 440 yds hurdles three years unimng; W. A. Low, the ex-chanioum Dunedin runner, being the only othe'r mar. to win two champion events' three vears in succession. The 100 yards proved ;l t to Smith, but in the 120 yds hurdles he was all but beaten by Xichol through takiii" things too easy on jumping the last hurdh" lhe idO yards alvo proved a gift to the speedy Aucklandcr, who at this stage be«au to feel the eifects of the afternoons wok. He had then run jive races, and was very weak through being seized with a. lit of vomiting shortly before the annotated time forstarting the 440 yds hurdleV This plucky utile runner, however, faced the music, and. notwithstanding his "icl-iies* romjied home the easiest of wiuuen; amidst the cheers of the crowd, and to the delight ol his fellow-club mates, two of whom earned him shoulder high. Madill had no ctiineuitr in winning the weight-putting ;lmi t hr„„ i,,',, the hammer. hj, the latter event he threw lobit 4 2 m, ;.,, Australasian record, but as the competitors were throwing down a slight hill it is not likely that the throw wilf'he passed as ,-i record.
