THE PATRIOTIC REGATTA.

This year the Ravensbourne Regatta Committee joined with the Otago Yacht Club in order to make the annual fixture at Rivet bbourne specially attractive, and thus givo a lift to the patriotic movement. This made the Ravensbourne regatta exceptionally interesting to those who take pleasure in aquatic sports, and, if the attendance of the general public was not larger than ordinary, this may be explained by the faot that they had »o miny j.lajos to go to that afternoon. In regard to the all-important consideration of weather, we had a» experioncewhicb, ifnotto the order of those who wished to see theyaehts exhaustively tested, was at any rate most dolfoiously pleasant. It waa the sort of weather that the books describe ae. an Italian summer day. The g-.-ntte airs from the south-east were too ligtit for sailing racingeven tho owners of small opefi boats were whistling to windward—yet, as it was " a soldiei'a wind," giving a lead both up and down the course, these races were finished in good time, and the sailing men had not the heart to complain when for once ia a way they could keep going and at the eamo time eDjoy the luxury of a sun bath and the "aweet idleness" that has so ajldom been their lot this season, while for the rowing events the smooth water tvas such as oarsmen deem a regular treat. As in previous years, the cutter Madge was lent as a flagship, and it was from her deck that the industrious and intelligent Executive controlled the sports. Ashore the Garrison Baud played a series of capital selections, and a committee of ladies, consisting of Misses M'Cuicheon, Johnston, and Sutherland, served tea and refreshments in the boating sheds. For another source of enjovmeot the Committee were indebted to Mrßrowr, owner of the oil-driven launch, who courteously took out parties of liidiea for a turn round the mofquito fleet that mustered off Ravensbourne for the occasion. The whole arnngementa were most ably carried out; in fact, we have seldom attended so well-managed n regatta. Mr T. Ross was the commodore, Mr E. T. JMoller the secretary, and other prominent officials in attendance w<ra Mr D. Larnach as timekeeper, Mr F. G. Cray as umpire, Mr Peter Sutherland a3 starter, Mr J.
