PICNICS.

The grocers are to he congratulated on the success of their outing at Kvansdale yesterday. The weather was ideal, the crowd large and orderly, and the various races were closely contested, which speaks well for the handicapping of Mr C. G. Bmdic. The annual cricket match Grocers v. Commercial Travellers wp.s played in the afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Grocers by 5 runs. The Committee one and all worked hard to make the picnic a success, and the public evidently appreciated their efforts. During the return trip to town Messrs J'. M. Marshall and P. Cavolin collected £1 Is in one earnige only from the. grocers on behalf of "the absent-minded beggars," which shows that oven in pleasure they are not forgotten. The winners of the principal events were: St. George Handicap, .1. Hobbs ; Married Grocers' Race, G. H. Smith ; Commercial Travellers' Race, R ; 11. Mcffin ; Committee Race, D. Henderson. The Champion Race; resulted in a dead heat between J. G. Robertson and P. Carolin.

'Die employes' second annual picnic in connection with the Dunedin Foundry and Engineering Company. Limited, was held at. Waitati on Monday in a. splendid paddock lent by Mr Colehan. Although the weather was anything but promising in the morning, about 200 persons availed themselves of the trip, and all a.ppeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. A capital programmed sports was carried out, the different events being keenly contested. The Committee also engaged the hall, where dancing was indulged in to music provided by the North-east Valley Band. Cheers were given for Mr Gardner for donating prizes, and Mr Colehan for the use of the ground. In the tug-01-war Blacksmiths and Moulders combined beat Engineers and Boilermakers after a hard-fought tussle. The employes of the Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company, Limited, held their annual picnic at Waitati on the grounds lent by Mr John Coleban. The visitors were conveyed out in drags from Messrs D. and J. Bacon's Btables. During the day' the usual races, games, and other amusements were indulged by one and all. Full justice was done to the good things provided by Host Colehan, and at the conclusion of the day's outing one and all voted the picnic a very successful and enjoyable one.
