A BIG FIRE.
MANY BUILDINGS DESTROYED,
STRATFORD, February 0 A big fire occurred here at midnight on Saturday, destroying the Bank of New Zealand, tho Town Hall, and the premises of Kivell (draper), Tenant (draper), Delannay (draper), Hawke (fancy goods dealer), Knox (bootmaker), Patterson (lailor), Barleyman (commission agent), Kirkpatrick (draper!. Nicholson (commission agent), the Public Library and Reading Room, the romm or Higbam (music master), the County Hotel (Captain Holdcroft), Teel’s (the chemist.) shop, and other buildings. Including the Bank of Australasia and Robinson’s drapery establishment, the buildings on the other side of the strest were more or less damaged. The stock was also damaged in many cases by the water and during removal. The following are tho insurances, so far as could be ascertained :—Royal Office, £1,400 ; Commercial Union. £1,400 ; Phamix, £1.190; South British, £960; Victoria. £550 ; New Zealand, £540; National, £4OO ; Allianre, £350; Northern, £200; Standard, £75. The gross value of the property and buildings is estimated at £15.000.
