OBITUARY.

Tuapeka lost Eeveral well-known residents by death last week. Dr F. J. Nicoll, who was practising in Lawrence, his native town, succumbed to congestion of the lungs. He was educated at the District High- School and at the' Otago University, subsequently going to Edinburgh, where he completed hi» medical Btudiea, Three other old renidenta who passed away are: Mr Wright I.owe, of Waitahuna road ; Mr Laurence Johnson, of Tuapeka Flat; and Mr Thomas M'Kenzie, of Waitahuna.

Mr Francis Gregory Laing, who died at' his residence, Queen street, on Saturday, was born in the manße at Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland, his father being the. Rev, William Laing. Ho was brought up to farming, and was living in Ayrshire when hia atteution was turned to New Zealand, and he left for Otago in the ship Cornwall, arriving here, in July, 1849. He had with his brother bought land from the New Zealand Company, but, attracted by tho discovery of gold in Auetralia, he tried his fortune there for a time. Ke returned to Otago, and took up a farm in the Tomahawk district. He carried on farming until recently, when he retired and took up hia residence in Dunedin. Mr iiugh Donnelly, of Kaseby, who pasßed awav on the 2nd inßt., landed in Victoria in 1859, and came on to New Zealaud afier hearing of the fame of the Otago diggings. When news of the discovery-of gold on the Hogburn reached Mr Donnelly he started for the new El Dorado with his cradle on his back, and resided there till the time of his death.
