FUNERAL OF DR CUNNINGHAME.

♦ A military funeral took place yesterday i afternoon at Port Chalmers over the remains of the late Dr J. Cunninghame, the health offioer of the port of Otago, and proved to be the largest ever seen in the Port, showing the universal respect and esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. All the business places were closed. Not only was Dr Cunninghame a prominent Freemason, but he was also a member of the friendly societies and organised ambulance classes and a keen volunteer, having been captain surgeon of the Port Chalmers Naval Brigade. It was therefore only meet that he should be interred with full military hoaorc The whole of the funeral ceremonies were under the direction of Lieutenant - commanding Waters, and the corps turned.out in full force. Strong contingents attended from Dunedin, amongst those being Lieutenantcolonel Webb (oommanding the district), Surgeon-major De Lintour, Captains Surgeons Fulton and Will, Lieutenants Johnson, Ross, Thomson, Major Beal (commandipg officer of the Dunedin Engineer*), several members of the .Dunedin and suburban volunteer corps, togstb.tr with Ser-geant-major Towler (the instructor of the Port Chalmnrt. Navalt). Masonic body, 100 strong, under the R. W. Bro. T. S. Graham, District Grand Master E'C., with his deputy and officers; a large 1 number of friends of the deceased gentleman ; and the general public. The procession was headed by the Garrison Band, who" played the Dead March in 'Siul' Oa tenoning the cemetery the Presbyterian Church service was held, and at the conclusion the firing party under Lieutenant-commandiog Waters fired the cust jmary three volleys. The coffin was entirely covered with beautiful wreaths, including a very large and appropriate one from the Naval Company; another from Lieutenant-commanding and Mrs Waters ; a very pretty one from the Ambulance Corps and Women's Class; a symbolical wreath from the W.M. and officers of the Port Chalmers Marine Lodge, No. 912, EC, of whieh lodge Dr Cunninghame was a member; and a most beautiful wreath sent by the deceased's servants; in addition to a large number of floral tributes from friends of the family. ___^_______^__
