SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A CONSTABLE.

INVERCARGILL, November 18. Frederick Woodbury, police constable, was charged at the Police Court to-day with assaulting a young woman with intent. The girl was going home between eight and nine o’clock at night, and alleges that Woodbury caught her by the arm and forced her along a lonely street and threw her down, when he was surpiiaed by two men and ran off. Two witnesses for the prose* cution, however, stated that the girl and Woodbury walked along in a friendly way, sat down under a tree, and engaged in con* versation, The case has not concluded.
