DRAUGHTS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY.
Nearly four years ago the draught-players of the North Island inaugurated the New Zealand Draughts Association, under whose auspices there haa since been held three 'championship meetings—viz., at Wanganui, *Oamara, and Wellington. The winner on each of the three occasions has been Mr J. A. Boreham, of Oamaru, a Dunedin representative securing second place in 189G and tieiag for the same this year. The aunual gathering for 1899 is to take place in Duuedin, and already a strong cotcm' ttee has been formed and preliminary arrangements entered into. It is the intention of the local CoKinittee to, if possible, make the three first prizes--First, £2O and title of " champion of New Zealaad"; second, £l2; third, £8; and to have at least seven cUier prizes. Flo far, an average of about twenty players have competed at the tourneys, but it is anticipated that the num. tor will be considerably increased at the •ceojfcest in Dnnedin neit Easter. A small charge is to be made for admission to the tourney, but all subscribers to the prize fund of 2j 6i and upwards will be entitled to free admission during progress of the play. Mr Joseph Abernethy has been appointed chairman, and Mr F. Hilliker lion, secretary to the Committee.
