THE COAL STRIKE IN WALES. {.Press Association—By Telegraph ■ LONDON, August 1. (Received August 2, 1898, at 10,50 a.m.) The coal owners of South Wales have definitely refused to concede the miners' demands, beyond a renewal of tho old sliding scale and an immediate advance of 5 per cent, in their wages.

The Conference of delegates from the Master Builders' Association to discuss legislation affeoting the trade is to be held in Wellington en Tuesday next. Mr J. J. Holland, M.H.R., will represent Auokland and Mr R. Meikle Dunedin. The delegates from Christohurch and Wellington have not been selected yet.
