PERSONAL.

The staff of the Otago and Southland branch of the New Zealand Insurance ComJany met on Saturday to bid farewell to Mr ames Edgar on his retirement from the company’s service. Mr E. B. Pilcher, the Invercargill manager, presented a shield containing the photos of all the branch officers, and the following illuminated address : “Presented to James Edgar, Esq., by the staff of the Otago and Southland branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company on the occasion of his resigning from that company’s service to assume the position of manager for New Zealand of the Victoria Insurance Company, Limited.” Many happy returns of the day to the Chairman of the Harbor Board.

Dr De Lautour, of Oamaru, and wife, are returning to the colony by the P. and 0. ’s Australia.

Mr J. Drummond, head of the Stock Department in Hawke’s Bay, has been transferred to Wellington. All through the recent church troubles at Wyndham the Rev. J. B. Smellie was loyally and substantially supported by the great majority of his congregation. The sequel to the recent libtl case is that a sum of £7O was subscribed as a “ tangible token of sympathy, confidence, and respect ” for the rev. gentleman, and will be handed over to him in the early part of this week.
