SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
At the Supreme Court, Christchurch, yesterday, the turf case of Proffitt v. Parker and others camo on. The claim was for £SOO from the representatives of the C.J.C. for assault and wrongful removal from the racecourse on November 14, 1896, the last day of tbe meeting. Mr Beswick appeared for Proffitt, and Mr J. B. Fisher and Mr Stringer for the defendants. After argument extending over tho whole day, Mr Justice Denniaton reserved his decision.
In the police court prosecutions against the bookmakers for trespass on the show grounds at the meeting of the Canterbury Trotting Club last week after being warned against doing so, the cases against H. Forward and C. Maok were dismissed. B. Champion, T. Williams, M. Smith, S. Lewis, and D. Rosa (who pleaded guilty), W. Miller, J. Ross, J. Ryan, H. Mooney, J. Cockburn, F. Franklin, Mr Hislop, and W. Whitta were each fined 40s. Costs were given in all cases, rangiug from £1 13a Cd to £1 19a 6d. Mr Beetham, S.M., in giving judgment, said thiß sort of thing must be stopped, as the same trouble arose at every trotting meeting. If the defendants wished he, would make the fines £5 to enable them to appeal, but this they did not desire. Percy Civill, of Sydney, won the Quartermile Saltwater Championship at Skegness, Lincolnshire, beating Derbyshire«by syds, in 4min 503ec. Other competitors in this event were Naylor and Ro*s. J. H. Tyers, the holder of the championship, did" not start. Derbyshire won the 200 yds race, Cavill being close up, second. New Headford's entry for the Hunters' Hurdle Race at the Hunt Club meeting has baen reinstated, as the name was removed from the forfeit list prior td the time of closing nominations.
