BRIEF MENTION.

G. Liddell, of Mornington, was one of the three New Zealanders to pass the M.B.C.M. examination at the Edinburgh University last month. The Premier and party arrived at Colombo on their way back to New Zealand two days ahead of time-table. All were well. They expect to reach Wellington about the 14th prox. A shower of sulphur fell in Hastings one night last week. Some of the Maoris who are in England for the 0 übilee, says the ‘ Home News ’ of July 9, were entertained at the Savage Club on Saturday last. They appear to have been invited to the club by someone who was not a member, and their appearance created no small surprise. The Savages, however, are nothing if not hospitable, and rose to the occasion. They insisted that the New Zealanders should come in, then plied them with drinks and smokes, and made much of their unexpected guests. One of the Maoris found his way to the billiard room and played a first-rate game, to the delight of the members, and altogether what might have proved a very awkward business was turned into a delightful evening, which neither the Savages nor their guests will soon forget. A woman named Harvey, at Bedminater, Bristol, celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee by giving birth, on June 22, to twins—boys. It is a most remarkable circumstance that on last Jubilee Day, June 22, 1887, Mrs Harvey also gave birth to twins—girls. The husband is a laborer.
