At Milton on Monday night the shop recently occupied by Mr Joseph Bremner was gutted, but the furniture stored therein, belonging to Mr John Mackay, was saved. The building, which belonged to Mrs Crossan, of Berwick, was insured for £175 in the New Zealand Office. Mr Mackav's furniture was insured in the Manchester Office for £IOO. A stable on the Waihemo property of Mr A. D. Bell was burned down this week. Insurances : £350 in the South British.
While Robert Crawford, a young man, was passing along Lower Union street at about half-past seven last evening he noticed a five-roomed wooden house, occupied by Mr 0. Moller, to be on fire. After giving the alarm Mr Crawford and several neighbors directed their attention to extinguishing the flames, and by the time the City Brigade (under the charge of Foroman Carrington) arrived on the scene the fire was well under control. The wall between the kitchen and another room and the roof of the kitchen were damaged, and some of the furniture waß partially burned—about £3O being the extent of the damage. When Mr and Mrs Moller left the house about seven o'clock there was a lamp burning in the kitchen, and after the outbreak the lamp was found lying on the floor broken, as if it had capsized. The dwelling was insured for £175 and the furniture for £IOO in the Standard Office.
