ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES.

St. Paul galloped the Cup distance at Ellerslie this morning. Mahaki did long, slow work. Day Star and Armilla are at Kohimarama. The ground is so hard that trainers are afraid to give their horses much fast work. St. Paul is quoted at 3to I for the Cup, Mahaki 4 to 1, Epaulet 6 to 1. TROTTING TROUBLES. CHRISTCHURCH, December 15. At a meeting of the South Island Trotting Association last night it was resolved—- “ That all owners, riders, drivers, and horses that have taken part in any events on the programmes passed by the Dunedin Jockey Club, and which programmes have not been approved by the Association in accordance with the rules, be disqualified during the pleasure of the Association; and that the Colonial Secretary’s attention be called to the attitude taken up bv the Dunedin Jockey Club.” REGATTA QUALIFICATIONS. WELLINGTON. December 15. In answer to questions raised by the local representatives of Otago and Southland, the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association have decided that rule 28, which states that maiden four-oared races must be rowed in clinker outriggers as defined by the Association, applies to all regattas held under the Association rules, and not only to championship regattas. The rule was passed with a view of killing inrigged racing. The Association have also ruled that winners of dingey races are not eligible to compete in maiden sculls, and that members of clubs do not prejudice their regatta classification by taking part in inter-club races. CRICKET. The following will play for the Butchers v. Albion on the North Ground to-morrow, at 245 :—Deuchrass (captain), Richmond, M. Bethune, Jarvis, King, Morrison, Mains, Sharpe, Sutherland, Botting (2), W. Fort. The following will represent the St. Andrew (grocers) in their match against A. and T. Inglis on the North Groundßooth, Breen, Irvine, Ogg, Harrison (captain), Collar, Roscoe, Black, Simpson, Trewern, Gleeson, Forsyth. Cramond, of the Waverley C.C., has at present an average of 77 runs per innings. We would remind our readers of the West Taieri Caledonian Sports at Outram on Boxing Day. The society have spared no expense to make the meeting a success, having put down a splendid racing track for the convenience of cyclists and runners, and a train is advertised to leave Outram after the sports at 6 30. Nominations close on Thursday, December 17Nominations for the handicaps at the Waikouaiti races close to-morrow. By the passage of a Bill for establishing Government institution for tie reception oj drunkards the Queensland Parliament has taken a forward step in moral legislation the effect of which will be carefully watched by the other colonies.
