THE FEDERAL RIFLE MEETING.
At the request of Major Somerville the Government have consented to change the ammunition first supplied for the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting for a like quantity of Martini ammunition manufactured by the Colonial Company from new powder. The Oamaru people propose giving the competitors who attend the meeting a picnic, which will probably take place at Eiderslie. Friday, the 13th inst. (the opening day), will be set aside as a holiday by the townspeople. The Wyndham (Southland) Rifle Club will be represented by Captain Fraser, and possibly by Messrs J. W. Raymond, J. A. Dodd, and H. Marshall.
There are said to be one or two “hot” shots among the Australian visitors. The Queensland riflemen had a competition last month for the purpose of picking a team to represent that colony in the Federal Match. The conditions were: 300, 500, 600, and 700 yards, ten shots at each range, 200 being the “possible.” Corporal Winterford, who was top scorer, put on the magnificent total of 178, made up as follows:
This score is, we believe, a record for Australasia. Corporal Winterford, who is a native of Queensland, was very successful in Sydney in 1894 at Randwick, winning the Dangar prize with a score of 48 out of a possible 50. He also won the Sargood prize in the same year at Melbourne.
The North Dunedin Rifles will have the following representatives:—Volunteer Richardson, sen., Corporalßrittenden, Corporal Longworth, Volunteer W. Hutchinson, Volunteer Armstrong, Volunteer Pollock, jun., Volunteer G. Miller. Sergeant Hendry will be the sole representative of the East Taieri Rifles at the meeting.
