VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

AN IMPORTANT DECISION. INVERCARGILL, October 25.

A decision of interest to volunteers has been given by Mr Poynton, S.M. Tbe commanding officer of the Bluff Naval Artillery sued John Hunter, a former member, to recover his uniform or its value, together with £2 damages for the detention. The Court ruled that it had no jurisdiction, as a particular punishment was provided for by the Defence Act for refusing to deliver such articles, and no alternative civil remedy was given. By making it a criminal offence for a volunteer to retain such articles on quitting tl o force, the Leg b a l i re had taken away tho option of a commanding officer to sue civilly. Plaintiff was nonsuited with costs. |

The Governor has appointed the undermentioned corps in the Otago District into an infantry battalion, under the designation of the Otago Battalion of Infantry Volunteers, with effect from the 10th October, 1895 :—Bluff Naval Artillery (acting as infantry for the time being), Riverton Rifles, Dunedin City Guards, Bruce Rifles, East Taieri R'fles, Invercargill City Guards, Oimaru Rifles, Dunedin Highland Rifles, Naseby Rifles, Gore Rifles, Riversdale R'fles.
