MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Moore for plaintiff, for whom judgment was given by default, with costs.

A. Briscoe and Co. v. Daniel Colquhoun.— Claim, £3 18s 3d, for tiles supplied. Mr Finch for plaintiffs-, Mr Woodhouse for defendants.—Mr Finch said the goods Were supplied to Dr Colquhoun on the order of the architect (Mr Burnside) and Mrs Colquhoun, and called evidence in support of his statement. —Mr Woodhouse, for the defendant, said his case was that the tiles were not to be supplied by Dr Colquhoun but by the contractor, and that they were simply to be approved by Mrs Colquhoun/—After evidence for the defence, His Worship gave judgment for the defendant, With costs.

CITY POLICE COURT.

(Before H. W. Bishop, Esq., S.M ) Affiliation. Willie Legertoood was charged with failing to provide for the support of hi 3 illegitimate child, of which Katie Moore was the mother. Mr Hanlon for complainant, and Mr Macdonald for defendant.—This case was partly heard last week.—Defendant's solicitor stated that a settlement had been arrived at, and handed in the deed of release and cheque.—The magistrate, approving of the arrangements, handed the cheque to Mr Hanlon and the deed of release to Mr Maodonald, after which the case was withdrawn. '

Drunkenness. —A first offender was convicted and discharged. Vagrancy.— Gathleen Johnston, a young girl of respectable appearance, was charged with this offence —Sergeant O'Neill explained that accused, who was eighteen years of age, came from Invercargill, where she was an inmate of the hospital. A number of ladies took an interest in her, and had her sent to the Salvation Rescue Home in Dunedin. She had been in the Home for the past six weeks, but her conduct had been anything but good. This morning she left the place, and was found by a policeman roaming about the streets. She had nowhere to go to, and he (Bergeant O'Neill) believed that so far she had not fallen.—Accused, in answer to the Bench, said she left the Home because she wanted a situation. She would go b?.ck.—One 6f the lady officers present expressed her willingness to take acoused back if she would obey the orders of the Home.—The Bench explained to accused that after she stopped in the Home a certain time the Army would endeavor to get her a situation.—The case was adjourned for a fortnight. Theft.— John Anderson, a young man, Was charged with stealing £3 7s and one key from the dwelling of Michael Kane, on the 23rd inst., the property of the said Michael Kane.—Mr Han lon appeared for accused.—Sergeant O'Neill stated that accused was in the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel en Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Kane, wife of the licensee, went to her bedroom at three o'clock on the same afternoon and left a puree containing £1 and over £2 in silver in a drawer. She returned to the room two hours afterwards and found that the money was gone. She charged accused, who was. sitting in the bar, with the offence, which he at first denied. A constable, who was passing at the time, was called into the bar, whereupon accujed admitted having taken the money. He said : "If I give up the money will you say nothing about it ?" He put out some money on the table, and on being searched by the constable ho was found to have in his possession over £2 in silver and a small button which Mrs Kane left in the drawer with the money. On being asked what he had done with the £1 note accused said he gave it to a young man named Fahey, and in compauy with the constable he went to look for Fancy. After they had gone some distance accused said he had not given up all the money, and on the constable making a further search ho found the missing note down the leg of his trousers. The key found on acoused had been missing from the door of the bedroom for the past three weeks. Evidence was given by Norah Kane, Michael Faliey, Michael Kane, and Constable Latim:r.— Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial, bail beiug allowed in his own recognisance of £25 and one surety of a like amount.
