NEWCASTLE, October 24.

la view of the probable strike the Wallsend Lodge decided to rejoin the Miners' Association. Intense and widelyspread distress prevails in the district, and there is a concerted movement among the miners to obtain Government assistance to enable them to proceed to the goldtields and elsewhere in search of employment.

A meeting of the Workers' Political Committee was held lust evening, Mr A. Judge being in the chair. The election of officebearers for the ensuing twelve months resulted as fallows : Chairman, Mr R. Slater; vice-chairmen, Messrs Taverner and Ferguson ; secretary, Mr H. Foreman; treasurer, Mr W. Belcher ; auditors, Messrs Nagle and Brown. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers for their services during the past year. The following resolution was adopted:—" That this meeting approves of the Public Contracts, Tenders, and Works Bill introduced by the Minister of Labor, and urges on the Government the desirability of placing the measure on the Statute Book this session, and that the city and suburban members be asked to assist in carrying the Bill." Michigan has passed a law fixing a heavy penalty upon railroad companies for the employment of persons addicted to the use of intoxicants. The conductors of the North-Western Railway are not allowed to enter a saloon, much less to use intoxicating drinks, whether on or off duty.
